An original pristine mind, then ego differentiates, and takes on the ways of our society, culture, world.
So, within this basic internalization, and externalizations . . . a dialectic . . . pretty much on a down to earth, colloquial orientation.
The self, here, may have problems . . . pinned down to some generic idea.
Then there’s even greater contexts than these though, and as John Lilly points out; we can move between them and our typical orientations. We can do the work, adjusting ourselves, assimilating the new experiences, within our typical home base levels. Piaget.
How could one explain these greater levels, though, within a way that also shows how the work can be done? I got the figure/ ground, with intent, as my rule of thumb. Its easy to see how there can be different foci, other pieces of the puzzle, even greater parts, the bigger picture.
The self one mulls over it all in the typical orientations, with its myriad variegated attitudes; but it may be exchanged for another type of self; ie, with another orientation and way. You, but new! The generic self of the internalization/externalization issue is gone! Ah, that’s the issue!
Yup, who’s the you that you are really interested in? Got it!

One can move more along with our intrinsic nature; ie, one with the universe, and its ways. Provides a newer level for interpretation, and understanding.
“Self-aware and abstracted” . . . a good basic.
“Self-image” is the typical beginning as well. Though there are many other associated aspects to that “internalization.”
In a practical sense, it works too, for one can use “intent and figure/ground” here, for functioning.
It has a lot of further options . . . “interconnected mode,” not separate. Its a flexible perspective, that can follow the flow, from wherever that comes. Its an abstraction as well; this can be anything one could imagine, and is not stuck to the basic space-time structure.
The notion of a “being entwined within an interactive field of meaning and knowledge,” took me past the externalized ways, separate, or the old notion of two minds, and the nasty things going on, like Freud’s. Religion . . . same issue. Though, to get into this position, I had to do endless work, to figure out what was going on: I called that my “extended thought series.” In all practicality, it was the “externalizing” things, per se, that slowed me down here, no matter what was going on.
My basics now, not confused by you and your ways. I can start directly from here, explain it to you as well. We’re pretty much in the position, like a chick, who has to take wing for the first time. Its the newer ways, the possibilities, that are the test of one’s courage.
